WOW! What a wonderful infomative meeting we had tonight. I cannot believe all the information we received in such a short time. My awareness has definately been raised about how and what our kids are doing on the computer/internet. We all have to keep a close check on what is going on with our kids especially when they have access to the computer. We have good kids in this town but it is easy to be lured into somthing criminal and dangerous without even knowing it. There are billions of web sites out there that anyone and everyone has access to and without knowing it your kids can be on some harmful sites. We had two wonderful speakers from the Department of Criminal Investigation, Troy Boone and Todd Rodig. They are only two of the few people in South Dakota that work on catching these computer criminals. Did you know that even though you delete something from your computer it is always still there and they can take it apart bit by bit and check everything you and your kids and their friends have been looking at or saying on the computer. If you have any questions about the sites your kids are using please get in contact with a person that can check your computer or if you can please go to the following sites to check for unsafe information: netsmartz.org, cybertipline.com, sdcybersafe.com. These are also posted on the school website under the PTT area. Many kids use the MYSpace site and once you are on there your information can go to millions of other people and this can lead to very dangerous situations. We all want our kids to be safe so lets keep track of what they are doing. We also received information on other file share programs that can be very dangerous. Even downloading music off of your computer and trading it with other people can actually be a crime. I cannot say often enough that we need to keep monitoring our children’s activities at home and away from home. Talk to your kids! Let them know that anything they see or read that is suspicious should be reported to you or a teacher or anyone they feel they can talk to. The Department of Health is looking into getting some of this information out also through different programs. One of the suggestions was the DARE program. Thank you very much for attending the meeting tonight. Attendance was 13 parents and 13 teachers. We appreciate all input you have and we hope everyone continues to attend. Our next meeting will be February 6. Please attend. Nicole Neugebauer

It was an outstanding source of information! Because we live in a small town we feel safer than most, but in reality our kids can be conversing with people who aren’t in a small town. Information given on the internet should be guarded! Kids and parents don’t need to be fearful of using the internet, but aware!!! Monitor! Monitor! Monitor! Learn about the technology that your kids are using and ask questions about what they are doing while they are on the internet! Troy Boone also talked about definitive consequences to unacceptable internet use. Troy and Todd did an outstanding job of informing on a level I think everyone in attendance could understand. This was an outstanding presentation from the PTT group!!

I came upon this document in my RSS feed this week and it fits very well with the presentation this week.

Simply copy and paste the link into your browser. It requires Adobe to read it, but most have it. It defines a lot of those unknowns that parents seem to wonder about that our kids know so well.

thank you. The more information we can get for the well being of our kids the better.

Hi Nicole,
First, I want to Thank You for posting this article concerning our children and the internet. It seems as if the kids these days are growing up a lot faster than they did just 30 years ago. LOL
Today, the kids in grade school are using computers at school and most of them do have computers with internet at home. We definitely need to know what they are doing while on the computer. Who are they messaging with, do they have a “my space” or “facebook” site of their own, and what web sites do they visit and how often do they visit them?
May I post this blog you wrote onto the Murdo blog, and may I also post the link that MEKS has posted here? Please let me know on here or by email to mgm_1260@yahoo.com whether I can “borrow” this information!!
THANKS!!

It was a great informational meeting. It looks as if our February meeting will be good also. I believe we will be talking about and getting opinions on getting computers for every kid in school/high school. The pros and cons should be very interesting. Thank you for being involved.

I just wanted to echo the sentiment that the PPT meeting on Internet Safety was excellent. I did not realize all the ways that the kids can get on the Internet–even through some of their gaming systems if they go to a place with wireless Internet (such as McDonald’s, etc.)! Wow! I also learned a lot about the different sites that the kids are using like MySpace and Facebook. While it seems like it would be easier to just ignore what is happening, the reality is that we need to be alert to what our kids are doing and learn about the latest in technology. Personally, I would love to see some more in-depth sessions on using this technology.
